This is one of the finest examples of Mediterranean Gothic, declared Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931. Its construction began around 1230 by order of James I, who wanted to build a Christian church on the site of the old mosque of Medina Mayurka. The works lasted several centuries and were not terminated until the year 1601. Its Neogothic parts date from the renewal that occurred in the nineteenth century, after the earthquake in 1851 destroyed several parts of the building.
Its interior features its grand nave, the Sala Capitular (Chapter House), the choir in the Royal Chapel, the apse and the side chapels. The oldest is the Trinitat Chapel, which holds the tombs of two kings of the dynasty of Mallorca: Jaume I and Jaume III. Also the modernist elements which Antonio Gaudí introduced in the temple, and the intervention of the Mallorcan artist Miquel Barceló in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
