Pollentia was founded by the consul Metellus in 123 BCE and marks the beginning of urban life in Mallorca. Thanks to its strategic location, between the bays of Pollença and Alcúdia, it had a great urban development between the first century BCE and III, which made it the most important city in Roman times of the Balearic Islands, with an area of ??between 15 and 20 ha.
This ancient city is located outside the medieval walls of the historic center of Alcudia, all declared a Historical Site. Since 2000 the Consortium of the Roman City of Pollentia is responsible for ensuring the conservation, protection and dissemination of this site.
Currently you can visit the areas of la Portella (residential area), the Forum and the Theater, which every August regains its former activity and becomes a stage for theater productions.
The historic site also features the Museo Monogàfic of Pol·lèntia, which shows through flat panels and archaeological remains how this Roman city was. In this museum, whose funds are managed by the Museu de Mallorca, are reproduced the theater, several temples and mosaics decorating the houses. Among the exposed findings are highlighted several coins and a girl's head in bronze.
