Chucho Valdés

Jazz Batá  is the new project of the Cuban pianist, composer and arranger Chucho Valdés, which he now presents at the 11th edition of the Jazz Voyeur Festival in Palma. In reality, it is about retaking a project that was fundamental in the development of the music of this artist, although at the time it went unnoticed.

When Chucho Valdés created Jazz Batá in 1972 - a year before founding his Afro-Cuban jazz-rock fusion group Irakere - the project was composed of piano, double bass and percussion. With a special predominance of batá, the double-drum with the shape of an hourglass is essential in the liturgy of Santería.

Along with Chucho Valdés (piano) are Yelsy Heredia (double bass), Dreiser Durruthy Bombalé and Yaroldy Abreu Robles, members of the Afro-Cuban Jazz Messengers (percussion and vocals).
