The 33rd Opera and Ballet Season of the Teatre Principal de Palma presents this production of Giacomo Puccini's masterpiece, Madama Butterfly, one of the great symbols of impossible love and the eternal feminine. With Italian libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, the original version was released in 1904 at La Scala in Milan, as Puccini wrote up to five versions of this opera in three acts.
This production of the Canarian Friends of the Opera has the musical direction of the young Mallorcan Antonio Méndez, recently named titular conductor of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra who now debuts at the head of the Orquestra Simfònia Illes Balears. The experienced Mario Pontiggia is in charge of stage design and stage direction, and Claudio Martín of the choreography. Also intervening the Cor del Teatre Principal, directed by Pere Víctor Rado.
Madama Butterfly is set in Nagasaki at the end of the 19th century and the protagonist is Cio-Cio-San, played by the Korean soprano Sae-Kyung Rim. The rest of the cast is formed by Lorena Valero (in the role of Suzuki), Eduardo Aladrén (Pinkerton), Javier Franco (Sharpless), José Manuel Sánchez (Goro), Antoni Lliteres (Yamadori), Pablo López (Bonzo), Marga Cloquell ( Kate Pinkerton) and Jorge Tello (Imperial commissioner).
