With only three years old, this famous Brazilian pianist played by heart pieces he had seen his older sister playing. Two years later he gave his first recital playing in public the Sonata in La mayor, K. 331 of Mozart. Nelson Freire arrives at the 56th Pollença Festival with a program composed by works by J.S. Bach, Schumann, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Stojovski and Chopin.
Nelson Freire (Buena Esperanza, 1944) studied with Nise Obino and Lucía Blanco, who had studied with a student of Franz Liszt. In 1957 he won the International Piano Competition in Rio de Janeiro, moving to Vienna, where his international career began with recitals and concerts, working with prestigious directors and as a guest of outstanding orchestras.
Nelson Freire has been nominated for Soloist of the Year and received an Honorary Award for the Victoires de la Musique for his whole career. He has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards (in 2006 for his 24 Chopin Preludes, 2007 for Brahms Concerts with Riccardo Chailly and in 2010 for Chopin's Nocturnos) and his latest work, Brazileiro Villa-Lobos & Friends, Received the 2013 Grammy as the best classical recording of South America.
