Saint Anthony (Sant Antoni) is one of the most important local festivals in Mallorca. It is also one of the most ancestral festivals, linked to the ancient fertility rites. It begins the night of the 16th when the streets and squares are filled with bonfires and the neighbors grill sobrasada, a soft mallorcan sausage made with ground pork, paprika, salt and other spices. They also grill other typical cold meat specialties. The dimonis, devils that have their characteristic dance, are also a form of entertainment as well as the reciters in Catalan language, famous for their songs full of irony. In the day of the Saint’s festivity, the beneïdes are celebrated, which consist in a parade of chariots and the blessing of domestic animals.

The places where this celebration is more eye-catching are the ones in Sa Pobla, Artà, Pollença, Muro y Manacor. They are also celebrated in  Palma, Santanyí, Alcúdia, Algaida, Pina, Andratx, Bunyola, Calvià, Capdepera, Costitx, Esporles, Estellencs, Inca, Mancor de la Vall, Maria de la Salut, Petra, Porreres, Puigpunyent, Ses Salines Colònia de Sant Jordi (Ses Salines), Sant Joan, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Santanyí, Calonge (Santanyí), Biniamar (Selva), Sineu, Sóller, Son Servera, Valldemossa, Vilafranca de Bonany.
