Situated in the center of the village Banyalbufar in the Sierra de Tramuntana, is the clastra of the ancient palace of la Baronia, a seventeenth century building now converted into a cultural space. In this paved courtyard, practically open, are celebrated various activities such as exhibitions, concerts and book presentations.
The Baronia of Banyalbufar was a feudal regime that was introduced in the valley dating from the conquest of Mallorca in 1229. The Lord of the Baronia had civil and criminal jurisdiction over the inhabitants of his domains. The town had been founded in the tenth century by an andalusí community and its name in Arabic, Banyalbahar, means 'built by the sea'.
The building consists of the rectory, a defense tower and a hotel. The clastra, or patio, is of large dimensions and keeps the Cotoner family crest, former owners of the architectural complex.
