Palma de Mallorca

It is located in the bastion of Sant Pere, forming part of the Renaissance style walls that surrounded Palma until the early twentieth century. An architectural complex which has integrated the modern building designed by the brothers Louis and Jaume Garcia-Ruiz, Vincent Thomas and Angel Sanchez. It is divided into three stories that are related to the outside, the walls and between each other by ramps, large skylights and interior balconies.

It has several permanent collections: Modernism and Postmodernism, Cabinet: Dialogues in Abstraction, Ceramics by Picasso, Miró Area, Dona Dona (dedicated to female faces and figures) and Duality. Works from the collection Baluard.

It also programs temporary exhibitions. At the edge of the wall rises the Bou (ox), an iron sculpture of 15 m in height designed by Santiago Calatrava.

Miró. Ubú en escena

Paintings, sculptures, works on paper and collector's books make up the new exhibition in Es Baluard Miró. Ubú es escena, opened in July 2012. The choice of works evolve around two important aspects in the career of Joan Miró: a deep admiration for the work of French novelist and playwright Alfred Jarry (1873-1907), in particular for his character Ubu, and the great love he felt for Mallorca, his relationship with intellectuals, friends and their struggle to defend the culture of the island .

Among the works on display, all from the Collección Serra, stand out three folders of prints, photographs, ninots and a folder of the artist's sketches. Also the bibliophile book Ubu Roi that Miró made in 1966 and includes the original text of Alfred Jarry and thirteen lithographs, which's  treatment reminds of scenographic spaces in which the characters in the play are situated. This book was followed by two editions of Ubu aux Baléares (1971), that situates the main character on the Islands, and L'Enfance d'Ubu (1975), twenty lithographs on the childhood of Ubu.

The second part of the exhibition consists of selected works that illustrate the esteem of Miro for Mallorca (where he settled in 1956), the pieces Paysage de Mont-gnaw, the work of Fernand Léger Esquisse pour les plongeurs (fond jaune) (1er état) and sculptures Figurine and Jeune Fille ou long cou.

Duality. Works from the collection Baluard

It is dedicated to five outstanding artists associated with Mallorca, such as Miquel Barceló, Miguel Angel Campano, Ñaco Fabre, Ferran García Sevilla and Guillem Nadal.

The works, all in large format, are representative of the dialogue between figuration and abstraction in the field of painting from the eighties to the present.
