The Teatre Principal of Palma was inaugurated in 1667 with the name Casa de las Comedias . In 1854 is carried out the first remodeling, with the nameTeatro de la Princesa. The interior decoration is the work of the French set designer Fèlix Cagé, who also decorated the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. On June 12, 1858, after a representation of Macbeth, a fire completely destroyed the theater.
Once rebuilt by the same decorator and with the same plans, it is reopened on September 14, 1860. In the spring of 2007 finished the works that kept the enclosure closed for six years to turn it into a modern building that however does not lose its historical character.
Nowadays, Teatre Principal has a plural and contemporary programming covering various genres, such as opera, music, dance or theater, and is a fundamental reference of the performing arts of Mallorca.
