La Rueta, Rua and Burial of the sardine are the three events of the Carnival of Manacor that takes place from February 20 to 25. It schedules many activities to be enjoyed on these days by grown-ups and children wearing their best costumes. This year, the Gran Fiesta de Carnaval has as a theme Fantasy World.
The Carnival in Manacor begins with Dijous Llarder (Thursday lardero) and ends on Tuesday 25 with the Burial of the sardine and Sa Jaia Corema, one of the oldest Lenten traditions in Mallorca.
Sa Jaia Corema was an old woman of paper, cardboard or painted wood that represented Easter. She had a cod in one hand and a bunch of carrots in the other, with seven legs and seven teeth that represented the seven weeks of Lent.
On the first day of Lent they hung it in the kitchen or in the dining room, and every Sunday they cut off one leg of the seven she had, until Holy Saturday she ran out of legs and they discarded what was left of her.
