Museu del Santuari de Lluc

Escorca

The Lluc Sanctuary was started to be constructed in the thirteenth century and was the first Marian shrine of the Balearic Islands. Much earlier the ancient inhabitants already dedicated this enclave of the Sierra de Tramuntana to religious cult, as evidenced by the archaeological remains of the site Cometa dels Morts (Comet of the Dead), from the fourth century BC. The museum opened in 1952, occupies the first and second floor of the shrine's main building and covers eight rooms: Archaeology, Treasury (which displays objects made of gold, silver and precious stones provided to the Virgin of Lluch), Camera Mallorquina (recreates the bedroom of a accommodated house from the XVIIIth and XIXth century), Imaginary Sacra, Ceramics, the room devoted to the painter Josep Coll Bardolet (1912-2007), Picture Gallery (with works of Majorcan painters of the nineteenth and early twentieth century ) and Textile Crafts.

One can also visit the Basilica, Renaissance style, its history file (one of the most important documentary collections of Mallorca), and a small botanical garden with over 200 species of native plants. The shrine is also famous for its permanent choir of the Escolanía de Lluc, known as the Blauets because of the blue robes they wear in ceremonial acts as in the Cant de la Sibil.la.

The monument is located 500 meters above sea level and amidst a beautiful landscape of mighty mountains. It offers hostelry service with 81 rooms (old cells) and 39 apartments with kitchens.
