The Teatre Principal d'Inca was inaugurated on November 14, 1914, the day of the festival and the festival of Santa Maria la Major and a few days before the Dijous Bo, the quintessential Inca fair and one of the most popular in Majorca. Months before, a society of owners called Teatro de Inca had been created, financed with exclusively private money.
The project and direction of the building was carried out by the architect Guillem Reynés, who was inspired by the Lírico Theater in Palma, and the decorations were commissioned by the set painter Francesc Olives. The original building has three bodies, a central one with a ground floor with four heights and two lateral ones with three floors on the right and two floors on the left. The facades are made of marés stone.
Over the years it was seen that the Teatre did not meet the necessary conditions and in 1945 the owners requested permission to rehabilitate the building. The person in charge of the reform was the architect Francesc Cases Llompart, who eliminated almost all modernist elements, turning them into a rationalist style.
In 1999 it passed into the hands of the Ajuntament d'Inca and in 2000 the building was closed due to its deterioration. Thirteen years passed until the new owners (Ajuntament d'Inca, Govern Balear and Consell de Mallorca) decided to reform it and put it back into operation.
The reform has been carried out respecting the architectural and patrimonial value of the property, recovering structural and decorative elements of iron seen from the original work of 1913, the walls lined with fabric and the decoration of plaster. It is striking, due to its originality, the large mouth of the stage that forms an arch that starts from the ground and covers the entire wall.
The reform has allowed the construction of a modern multipurpose space with capacity for 154 spectators, which completes the renewed cultural facilities for the city.
After eight years of interrupted works and 107 years after its inactivity, the Dijous Bo on November 18, 2021, the Teatre Principal d'Inca reopened its doors.
