This famed work by German composer Carl Orff (1895-1982) is based on a collection of goliard songs of the 12th and13th centuries, which were found in the 19th century in a document found in Benediktbeuern Abbey (Bavaria). The term Goliard was used in the Middle Ages to refer to certain types of vagabond and licentiousness clerics.

Carl Orff premiered Carmina Burana in 1937, structured as a scenic cantata for orchestra and chorus, with the participation of soloists (soprano, tenor and bass) and giving a prominent role to percussion. Its best known piece is O Fortuna, which is the first part of the intro and is repeated at the end of the work.

Carmina Burana Festival closes the X Festival Miquel Tortell.
