Juan Echanove directs this adaptation of The Beauty Queen of Leenane, a work by British-Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. Starring María Galiana, Lucía Quintana, Javier Mora and Alberto Fraga.
A house perched on a hill on the outskirts of Leenane, in the Connemara region, northwest of Ireland, in the mid-1990s. Mag Folan and his daughter Maureen have lived alone for twenty years. Her other two married daughters live far from Leenane and Maureen, who remains single in her forties, has to take care of her mother, who has very limited movement.
Their respective characters, tainted by silences and lies, and marked by a tense and repressive mother-child relationship, by traumatic acts from the recent past and by a history of reciprocal damage that will be revealed throughout the action, will be altered by an episode local: the eventual return to Leenane of Pato Dooley, who works as a laborer in London, on the occasion of a family farewell party for an uncle who is returning to America after the holidays.
The circumstance will lead to the reunion of Pato and Maureen, which will cause obvious displeasure in the old woman, as well as a chain of situations between mother and daughter with dramatic consequences.
