This unpublished exhibition with photographs by Oscar Pipkin pays tribute to one of the great cultural events that took place in Mallorca at the end of the 20th century: the joint performance of the Cuban dancer Alicia Alonso and the great Russian dancer Rudolph Nureyev on July 31, 1990 in the courtyard of la Misericordia.
The two great myths of classical ballet joined their talent to interpret the Poème de l'amour et de la mer, op. 19, by Ernest Chausson, with choreography by Alberto Méndez. They were accompanied by soprano Victoria de los Ángeles and eight dancers from the National Ballet of Cuba.
On the 30th anniversary of the performance and coinciding with the centenary of the birth of Alicia Alonso (Havana, 1920-2019), the exhibition allows you to enjoy a complete selection of that photographic work and, at the same time, recall the beginnings of the building of La Misericordia as a cultural center of reference.
Alicia Alonso and Rudolf Nuréyev at La Misericordia, organized by el Departamento de Cultura, Patrimonio y Política Lingüística del Consell de Mallorca, through the Arxiu del So i la Imatge, consists of 35 color and black and white photographs, information panels with the poetry book, press clippings of the time and the screening of the documentary Three myths for a night, from the National Museum of Dance of Cuba.
