Guillermo Pastrana & Orquestra Simfònica Illes Balears

Fifth concert of the XII Vila de Santanyí International Music Festival. It is celebrated in the parish church of Sant Andreu and will be performed by cellist Guillermo Pastrana and the Orquestra Simfònica Illes Balears, conducted by Pablo Mielgo.

The cellist Guillermo Pastrana is considered one of the most important Spanish artists of today. A disciple of Ivan Monighetti and Gustav Rivinius, he has been influenced by other great teachers and performers such as Thomas Demenga, Wolfgang Boettcher, Maria Kliegel, Raimund Korup, Rafael Rosenfeld, Vladimir Ashkenazy or Eduard Brunner, among others.

He has performed in cities and festivals around the world and interpreted the great cello repertoire with leading orchestras, as well as making recordings for RTVE and several CDs for record labels such as Naxos, Orpheus, Brillant Classics and IBS Classical, for which he has received awards and great recognition among the specialized press.

He is currently a Professor at the Musical Arts Madrid school and since 2017 he is an assistant professor at the Higher Conservatory of Music of the FHN – Academy of Music of Basel, in Switzerland. Guillermo Pastrana plays with a Antonio Cassini cello built in 1670.

The Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears was created in 1988 under the institution called Fundació Pública de les Balears per a la Música, which includes the Balearic Government, the Palma City Council and the Consell de Mallorca. It performs its regular season at the Auditòrium in Palma, as well as in the opera seasons at the Teatro Principal in Palma and the Teatro Principal in Maó, in addition to various performances in different places on the Islands.

The Orchestra has accompanied soloists of international renown such as Currently, Julian Rachlin is featured as an international artist. The young violinist Francisco Fullana has been in residence as a Balearic artist.

The OSIB has toured extensively, including performances in important venues such as Radio France in Paris and the Musikverein in Vienna. Since 2014, its principal conductor has been Pablo Mielgo, co-artistic director of the the Philharmonic Academy of Medellín and artistic and musical director of the Saludarte Foundation.
