Jordi Savall (Barcelona, 1941) is one of the most versatile personalities of his generation. A pioneer in the revival of Renaissance and Baroque music, he is an acclaimed viola player, conductor and musicologist specializing in early music.

Savall has recorded more than 230 albums since 1968 as a soloist, accompanied by other artists, as a member of other groups and directing formations founded by him. In 2011 he won a Grammy for Best Small-Format Classical Genre Performance.

Throughout a career defending ancient music, Jordi Savall has received numerous distinctions. In 1988 he was appointed Officier de l'Ordre des Artes et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture and in 2012 he was elevated to the rank of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres and Knight of the Legion of Honor.

In 1990 he received the Creu de Sant Jordi from the Generalitat of Catalonia and in 2015 the Spanish Ministry of Culture awarded him the Gold Medal for Fine Arts. Since 1999 he has been an honorary member of the Vienna Konzerthaus and in 2008 he was appointed Ambassador of the European Union for intercultural dialogue and, together with Montserrat Figueras, they were invested as Artists for Peace within the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors programme.

In this concert, which is part of the Estiu a Bellver programme, Jordi Savall plays a 6-string viola da gamba by Pelegrino Zanetti, Venice 1553, and a 7-string viola da gamba by Barak Norma, London 1697. He is accompanied by Xavier Díaz -Latorre, who plays the theorbo and the guitar.
