The American singer and actress Diana Ross made her cinema debut with this film directed in 1972 by Sidney J. Furie in which she plays Billie Holiday, a role for which she won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar as Best Actress.
The projection of Lady sings the blues is part of the The International Jazz Day (April 30), an initiative of UNESCO and the great pianist Herbie Hancock. This year the theme chosen is Against Intolerance, in homage to the singer Billie Holiday (1915-1959), the most admired female voice in jazz. April 7 was the centenary of her birth.
