Patricio Guzmán (Santiago de Chile, 1941), director of the acclaimed trilogy La batalla de Chile (Battle of Chile) (1977-1980), gives a seminar on documentary cinema, organized by the associations of Filmmakers and Audiovisual Production in the Balearic Islands, APAIB and ACIB, respectively, in collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB).
Patricio Guzman is one of the most prestigious active documentation specialists. His filmography highlights La batalla de Chile, five hours of production filmed in 1973, in the months before and during the coup of Augusto Pinochet. Guzman himself was arrested and threatened with execution at the National Stadium in Santiago, where he remained captive for fifteen days.
After leaving his native country and secretly taking the footage with him, he managed to finish the film in Cuba, which was released in three parts, in the years 1977, 1978 and 1980. Other major titles in his career are En nombre de Dios( In God's name) (1987), La Cruz del Sur (The Southern Cross) (1992), La memoria obstinada (Obstinate Memory) (1997), El caso Pinochet (2001) and Salvador Allende (2004).
Guzman’s stay in Palma will coincide with the premiere of his latest film, Nostalgia de la luz (Nostalgia for the Light) (2010), best documentary at the European Film Awards 2012, at the Cine Ciutat of the Balearic capital.
Those interested in enrolling in the seminar can do so at the website of the ACIB (www.acib.es).
