Since the creation of the myth of the Tower of Babel to the appearance of the first skyscraper in the United States, in 1850, the model has been replicated in the world during the twentieth century and continues in the XXI. These buildings are one of the most important hallmarks of modernity and constitute an essential reference in terms of urban planning.
This exhibition, curated by Robert Dulau (conservative Heritage chief of France) and Pascal Mory (architectural historian), offers a journey through the history of these buildings through paintings, prints, drawings, models, photographs and films. After its passage through CaixaForum Barcelona and Madrid, it now reaches Palma where it will continue until May 26.
Torres y rascacielos. De Babel a Dubai (Towers and skyscrapers. From Babel to Dubai) is divided into seven areas arranged chronologically based on the myth of the Tower of Babel. There are spaces dedicated to the 'Cathedrals, towers and minarets', the Eiffel Tower, 'The spring of skyscrapers (1885-1919)' and, among others, covering the global dissemination of skyscrapers from 1973 to 2013, where the cities of Asia and the Middle East take over with buildings like the Jin Mao Tower in Hong Kong (421 m), the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur (452 m), the Taipei (509 m) or the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (828 m), the highest in the world.
Among the models exposed stand out a 3D recreation of the Tower of Babel painted in 1563 by Pieter Brueghel the Elder or the original model of the Empire State Building, built in wood and plaster that has been loaned by the Museum of the City of New York.
