'Yard' by Gavin Turk

0 Votes

Gavin Turk (1967) is one of the main proponents of the Young British Artists movement, particularly known for his elaborate recreations of works by legendary artists (Marat, Magritte, Boetti, Warhol ...) in which he adopts his personal aesthetic and his creative processes.

This artistic 'regeneration' is the concept behind Yard, his most recent work which is now shown in CCA Andratx. The assembly consists of a short film shot in East London on a vacant lot next to the studio of Turk, one of the few industrial plots in the area that have not yet been re-urbanized by the housing boom. The garbage strewn in the field fits into the style of the video games shoot 'em up, positioning the viewer as an artist-avatar predator on a mission to retrofit the territory in the wasteland of modernity.

The ruins of capitalism shown by the camera will reappear in the sculptures gathered in Yard. Among them The Golden Thread  (2004), a maze built with double-sided mirrors; and We Are One  (2014), a large-scale neon work announcing the exact number of the world population at 18:30 pm on January 24, 2014, the time that the piece emerged.

The exhibition also includes unpublished works, such as mobile scale playground built from remnants of scaffolding, rusted exhaust pipes and tires deflated found in the open field.
