‘Carmina Burana’ by Carl Orff

1 Vote

This famed work by German composer Carl Orff (1895-1982) is based on a collection of goliard songs of the 12th and13th centuries, which were found in the 19th century in a document found in Benediktbeuern Abbey (Bavaria). The term Goliard was used in the Middle Ages to refer to certain types of vagabond and licentiousness clerics.

Carl Orff premiered Carmina Burana in 1937, structured as a scenic cantata for orchestra and chorus, with the participation of soloists (soprano, tenor and bass) and giving a prominent role to percussion. In the version realized by Orff that is now presented in the Teatre Principal d'Inca within the 27 Festival de Música Clàssica d'Hivern, the orchestra is replaced by two pianos, keeping the rest of the elements of the original work.

Under the leadership of Felipe Aguirre involved more than 50 musicians on stage, with the participation of Orfeó L'Harpa d'Inca, directed by Margalida Aguiló, and the Cor and Ensemble Percussiò Euroclàssics. Soloists also Francesc Blanco and Maria Victòria Cortès (pianos), Máriam Guerra (soprano), José M. Sánchez (tenor) and Lluís Sintes (baritone).
