‘Eduardo Arroyo: retratos y retratos’

Exhibition of Eduardo Arroyo (Madrid, 1937) with a hundred pieces and focused on portraits and photography, works that are seldom exposed and never confronted. The 33 paintings and drawings and sculptures that form this exhibition show a gallery of portraits of characters of national and international history: historical figures like Napoleon or Isabella, writers like Franz Villier, fighters like Manuel Cerda, martyrs like San Sebastian, poets like Hölderlin and painters as Soutine, Van Gogh, Rembrandt or Richard Lindner.

The selection includes pieces from the late 50s, when he moved to Paris, until 2011, with some sculptures and, above all, three very recent self-portraits the artist has disfigured by throwing liquids on them.

Seventy mostly unpublished snapshots, that all belong to the author's collection complete this exhibition and are a testimony of his work with photography.

Eduardo Arroyo has always been interested in old photographs of the flea markets, wastes of family albums and snapshots of unknown authors and anonymous people, on whose support and qualities he has worked and intervened (by painting, cutting, fragmenting, juxtaposing them into drawings, paintings or paper tracing, making collages or photo-collages, print-screening them) the best he thought and more suited to his pictorial interests.
