The calçots (spring onions) are a very typical variety of onion of the inner part of Catalonia and one of the most typical dishes of its cuisine, being widely consumed at the end of winter accompanied by a romesco sauce.
Rotary Club Palma Ramon Llull and A.A.V.V. Sa Calatrava-Montesion-Santa Clara organize the IV Gran Festa de la Calçotada Benèfica, in favor of Mallorca Sense Fam and Fundació Monti-sion Solidària. Each serving has 10 calçots, salsa, sausage, bacon, bread, ensaimada, wine, water or soft drink.
The spring onions, which are shaped like leeks, roasted grilled and eaten in a very concrete way: dipped in the sauce, with the head cast backwards and taken to the mouth. You do have to have a napkin on hand because it is very easy to stain yourself.
