📖 The story
The old scholar Faust is ready to strike a deal with the devil to regain knowledge, youth and earthly power. Méphistophélès grants him everything in exchange for his soul, and it is young Marguerite who ends up paying the price.
Gounod worked with librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, who adapted their own stage play, itself inspired by Goethe's Faust. The opera premiered on 19 March 1859 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris.
🎭 The cast
Nicolas Cavallier (Méphistophélès), Sunnyboy Dladla (Faust), Veronica Granatiero (Marguerite), Yiorgo Ioannou (Valentin), Begoña Gómez (Siébel), Laura Vila (Dame Marthe) and Joan Miquel Muñoz (Wagner). Set design by Éric Ruf and lighting by Bertrand Couderc.
ℹ️ Good to know: running time approx. 210 minutes. Sung in French with surtitles in Catalan, Spanish and English. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
