📖 The talk
12 September is Mallorca Day: it marks the arrival of King Jaume I's troops on the island in 1229. Behind the date lies a much longer story, with centuries of debate about what was being remembered, how it was celebrated and who decided its meaning.
Ensenyat traces that history and asks an uncomfortable yet fascinating question: how much of a national day is historical fact, and how much is a later construction?
🎓 The speaker
Gabriel Ensenyat Pujol is a historian and lecturer at the University of the Balearic Islands, specialising in the early modern history of Mallorca and the author of many works on the island's identity and memory.
