📖 A journey into Palma's urban and architectural past
During the Middle Ages, the Riera river flowed along present-day Born and Carrer de la Unió. After being diverted to Passeig de Mallorca in the early 17th century, its former riverbed gave way to new streets. In 1699, Mateu Gual-Sanglada commissioned the baroque mansion that stands today.
Yet Can Balaguer holds an earlier secret: it was half a house connected to the medieval "old houses" on Carrer de Sant Jaume. During renovations completed in 2016, genuine 14th-century wall paintings were uncovered inside the surviving medieval section, now arranged as the Sala Medieval.
🎨 Discovering Can Balaguer's living heritage
Throughout this one-hour tour, participants explore these preserved remains to understand the city's historical evolution and the artistic significance of the early paintings.
