📖 The pioneers of electronic sound
Directed by Lisa Rovner in her 2020 feature debut, this American documentary uncovers the history of electronic music through the experiments and stories of women composers who redefined musical boundaries. Drawing on rare archive material, recordings, and first-hand accounts, the film steps into their studios and details the tools they used to carve out brand new acoustic pathways.
Figures such as Clara Rockmore, Daphne Oram, Bebe Barron, Delia Derbyshire, Maryanne Amacher, Pauline Oliveros, Wendy Carlos, Eliane Radigue, Suzanne Ciani, and Laurie Spiegel take center stage. Tape reels, oscillators, and early synthesizers became experimental devices that expanded sound from early electronic explorations into modern digital production.
